Wow! I need to catch up!

We have been working so hard I haven't even had time to post things on the blog.  The Apes have studied the three states of matter, how matter can change, mixtures and solutions and then there has been math too!  We are moving right along with our division using real world problems or story problems, multiple strategies and even a card game called "Division Compare"!  I have a bunch of pictures to catch you up!

I sent another PTA envelope home today for anyone who has not joined yet!  It is $5 to support a great group who works nonstop for our class and our school.  You are not required to volunteer if you join but your dues help fund projects for our students throughout the year! Please consider joining and help our class get 100% participation!

L and J working on a presentation about matter.

Tiyah checking her facts before she presents her topic!

K and H discussed what should be included on a graphic organizer about chemical changes.

Division Compare is a great way to practice division problems.

Some of us love division, as you can see!

J and K working hard to check their work and see who won the point!

Do I see laughter during science?  It is fun!

How would you separate a mixture of sand, salt and iron?

We learned to think about the properties of each piece of the mixture.  Such as iron being attracted to a magnet.

Why is she messing up her hair?

It must be the new thing?

Salt is attracted to the static electricity...that is what they were all doing!

Awesome Abbey, that is dedication to your science work!

How does stirring help the dissolving process?

We tried it and had a control group to compare our results.

I still see the salt in cup B and no salt in cup A.  Great job!

We even work as a group to play multiplication review games!

Or we play one on one!

We have Abbey vs. Abbey in the Product Game!

Star Students!

I am sorry Tyler and Abbey, I am late posting your pictures.  Sometimes in short weeks we may not celebrate a Star Student but these two were too awesome to miss!  Abbey and Tyler always make good choices and work hard!  Congrats to you two and keep it up!

September 11th and Jaguars!

We learned about the events of September 11, 2001 last week.  Over the weekend, even the Jacksonville Jaguars had events to honor those who lost their lives on that day and those who serve our country in the armed forces.  Here are a few pictures showing their festivities.

PTA!!

I really want our class to have 100% PTA membership.  Please send in your $5 to help us get there!  They do so much for us as a class and as a school.

Open House is next Tuesday at 6:30.  Please come join us and learn about your child's classroom!

Measuring as Scientists!

In math we have learned so many ways to solve division problems.  It is getting easier to complete our work and we are working great with our tables.

During science we have spent time wondering how we can measure like scientists.  We used a pan balance to compare and measure mass of solids, used rulers to measure the length and width of solids and finally learned to use the graduated cylinder to find the volume of liquids.  After comparing the texture, mass and color (describing the properties of our matter) of the same solids and liquids, we learned to read the meniscus when discussing the volume of a liquid.  Here are some pictures to show our hard work.

Our First Week!

We have reviewed multiplication and our strategies including the generic rectangle, repeating our addition, and using landmark numbers.  Thursday we started our unit on division.  So far we have seen repeated subtraction, using multiplication to work backwards, clustering, and the partial quotient strategies to solve division.  I am impressed so far and I can't wait to see what else you guys can share about division.

In science we have looked at science tools, measuring objects and we have explored liquids and solids.  We reviewed the three states of matter and practiced describing matter using its properties.  We are going to continue our fun next week!

We are off to a great start and I hope you all have a great weekend!

Star Students!

We have had such a great first week of 5th grade!  Every week we get to celebrate a Star Student and this week Ann and Joshua worked so hard to earn the title! Great work!

Here is Ann and Joshua with Goody and Gibby, our class mascots! Keep up the good work!

We Are Ready!

Rooms 73 and 71 are ready for you!  Mr. Gibbons and I have been working so hard to get everything in place and ready for Monday.  We are both so excited to meet each of you and start learning and having fun!  The only school supplies you will need to bring are about 10 pencils, a composition book and a pack of ruled notebook paper.   As we say all year "It is good to be an Ape!"

Wow! Summer has moved fast!

We have spent time in Fernandina Beach, Virginia Beach and now moving.  This has been a very busy summer but at least we all still have a few days to relax before we get back to working hard.  Here are a few pictures of our summer.

We went to Fernandina with several friends. This is Caden, one of Ryan's best friends!

Ryan got to go tubing for the first time with her cousin and friend.

Then they made me go tubing, it is harder than it looks but fun!

Ryan and Ariela met their friends at Busch Gardens.

This is Ryan's Great Gramper Goodman.

The Bay is fun with Ashlee, Ryan's cousin who is now playing on the 15 year old Coastal National Volleyball team in Va Beach.  Did I mention she will only be 14 in August! Go Ashlee!

Learning to Polka in front of a live audience is not very nice!

The heat was so bad Ryan played in the water park with her clothes on!

She enjoyed the live audience for the Chicken Dance!

Summer has been busy!

I have not had a moment to post anything.  I have been so busy so far this summer and I actually thought I was going to relax.  Ryan and I went to Fernandina Beach for a week and a half while Mr. Goodman came out for about 5 days in between work.  I will have to post some pictures as soon as possible.  Everyday was spent swimming, building sand castles and jumping the waves in our beautiful ocean.  We got to see fire works for the 4th from the beach which was perfect and peaceful.  Now that we are home we are planning our next trip to my hometown to visit family.  Watch out Virginia Beach, the Goodman's are coming.

Ryan also attended volleyball camp which she loved! Here are a few pictures of her in action.  She misses you all and asks about you all the time.
